Yes! We will be doing our Selby Holiday Lights again this year and hopefully I won't get sick and be unable to get out prizes in a timely fashion. Nominations for the following categories will begin 1 December and go until 12 December. The categories are:
Holiday Classic - Traditional and classic lights, not too much, elegant
Childhood Memory - Lights and animations that one would remember from their childhood
Total Griswald - Draining power supply for the rest of the neighbor, completely overwhelming and makes you draw your breath
Please email nominations including:
To SelbyBay@gmail.com. Nominations will be accepted from 1 December to 12 December. All nominations will be posted on the front page of the website:
Judging will be by poll on the Selby blog. One vote per computer. Judging will take place 13 December to 19 December.
Lastly, if you receive any gift cards that you know you will not use or would like to purchase a gift card to donate, then I will be accepting donated gift cards from now until 9 January. Gift cards will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Baltimore. They can used by out-of-town families who have children in local hospitals. Ronald McDonald Houses provide shelter for families at little to no cost while their children are receiving specialized care at local hospitals.
Good Evening Selby,
Here's hoping everyone has had a wonderful Thanksgiving and the kids got a little break to recoup before back to school tomorrow. We're gearing up for the holidays, so please take the time to read through the updates. There's a lot of information.
7:00pm - Community Board Meeting
9:30am - Selby tots
6:30PM - Yoga
** Jogging club is done for the winter
8:00pm - Open Jam Session
5:30pm - Selby Holiday Party
** Selby Holiday Party **
Our annual 1st Friday Happy Hour Holiday Edition (Selby Holiday Party) will be on Friday, 4 December at 5:30pm. Our clubhouse will be festively decorated and we'll be expecting a visit from Santa from 6:00-7:00pm. Get those wish lists ready! There will be kids crafts in the back room and, of course, our Ugly Sweater Contest!!! This year we will be awarding a man, woman and child for their best ugly sweaters. Don't forget to check out the sign-up genius!!
NOTE: Firehouse Santa will be coming to Selby this Sunday. If you would like to donate something, but can not be there on Sunday evening, then please bring your donation to the holiday party and we'll get your donation to Santa.
** Firehouse Santa **
The Woodland Beach Volunteer Fire Department will be escorting Santa around Edgewater and Mayo again this year. They will stop in Selby around 7:00pm and will ONLY STOP AT THE CLUBHOUSE. We all love to see Santa and it's a great photo op, but it is also a great chance to give to those in need during the holidays. Please bring a wrapped gift labeled with "boy" or "girl" and appropriate age range and/or size. Don't forget the older kids too (13 to17)! They will also be collecting new clothing.
This year the WBFVD is sponsoring Backpacks of Love and is encouraging everyone to bring an item to help fill backpacks to give to children who need to be removed from their environments. This is an amazing program and they rely on donations from our local communities. You can learn more about The Blue Ribbon Project and their "Backpacks of Love" program at:
If you would like to donate an item/s to The Blue Ribbon Project for the Backpacks of Love program and will not be able to see Santa on Sunday evening, then feel free to bring your donation with you to the holiday party and we will make sure Santa gets it. Here is a small list of the items they are looking for. There is a more comprehensive list on the website. Travel items are fine to donate. Please make sure that all items are new.
** Goodreads **
The Selby Goodreads group (Selby Bay Readers) has been totally updated. If you are reader and are interested, then feel free to hop over Goodreads and check out our "new" group. We are ALWAYS looking for new moderators. If you are interested, then let me know and I can set up a folder for you!
That's about it for this week! Have a great week and don't forget to fill out our sign up genius!! See ya on Friday!!
Good Evening Selby!!
Feels like it's gotten a cold outside. Maybe we'll see an earlier snow? I know...let's get the turkey over first and then move on to snow and winter holidays. Here is your Selby Weekly for the week of 22 November.
6:30pm to 7:30pm - Yoga
7:00pm to 8:00pm - Community Center Reservations
7:00pm to 8:00pm - Key Fobs and Parking Stickers
AACPS will be close Monday through Friday for students and Wednesday through Friday for staff.
Jogging Club will now be over through the Winter and will begin again in the Spring. It's getting way too cold and dark for the little ones...and me.
**Selby Holiday Celebration**
Our Selby Holiday Celebration will be held on Friday, 4 December from 5:30pm until 10:00pm. Yes, we have a signup genius up and ready for some great donations to make this party a success. Of course, we will get a visit from Santa and pull those ugly sweaters out of the closet because again this year we will have an ugly sweater contest. A prize will be awarded for the best man, woman and child.
I think that's about it for the week. Have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving!!
Good Evening Selby,
Here are a few things that are happening this week. Hope you can attend a few!
9:30am - Selby Tots
4:00pm - Jogging Club
6:30pm - Yoga
7:30pm - Ladies Night
4:00pm - Jogging Club
** Jogging Club**
I'm going to run Jogging Club on a week-by-week basis as it gets colder and the days get shorter. Jogging Club is a great way to get the kids outside and running right after school.
**Tis The Season - For Deliveries**
Cyber Monday is right around the corner and packages are going to be delivered all over Selby. Recently we have had some packages stolen and I hope that they are isolated events, BUT, to be on the safe side, talk with your neighbors to watch over your home when you are expecting packages. If they see a package, then maybe they could grab it or hide it. If you have neighbors that are home during the day, then ask if they would be willing to let you use their address to have your holiday packages delivered. I'm sure they could be enticed by a gift certificate or a special thank you!
**Small Business Saturday**
Saturday, 28 November 11am to 3pm
131 Mitchells Chance Rd (by Steakhouse)
Admission: 3 cans of food or 1 unwrapped toy or BOTH!!
This is a great opportunity to investigate the little shops at South River Colony! Most are privately owned and are great places to pick up original gifts for those hard-to-shop-for folks. There will be a moon bounce, live music and food. Stop by with the family and celebrate Small Business Saturday!!
**3rd Annual Lights and Leashes at Lights on the Bay**
Thursday, 19 November 6pm to 10pm $20 per car
Sandy Point State Park
This is a one night only fundraiser for the SPCA. The SPCA relies on donations to care for their animals. On this night, you get to leave your car parked and bring your leashed fuzzy to walk through the beautiful lights!! Grab your friends and family and make a night of it! It's for a great cause!
Well, that's it for this week Selby! Have a GREAT week!!

* Jogging Club
I apologize for the past couple Wednesdays. Things have been popping up. This week I'll be attending the middle school Black-Eyed Susan book club at the public library. They meet the second Wednesday of each month to discuss a new book. This month is The Night Gardener. Next month they will be reading Ice Dogs by Terry Lynn Johnson. This is a great opportunity to get those middle schoolers reading!!
* Food Drive
Our Selby-For-The-Hungry Food Drive ends this weekend! If you haven't contributed, then there are several opportunities. You are welcome to bring a nonperishable food item to any of the activities listed above. Feel free to set the items on the counter. We are also collecting pet items. See a full list on the flyer on the website.
The Selby Community will have Dumpsters delivered by County Public Works down at the Beach & Park parking lot on Friday, Nov. 20th and they will be picked up the next morning Nov. 21st.
I know – ONLY 1 DAY – This is what they are making available this year – Sorry!
Please do not leave any of the following:
Junk Cars, Golf Carts, or Trailers
Refrigerators, Freezers or Air Conditioners
Tree Trunks or large logs
Propane Tanks, Oil Tanks and Gas Tanks
Paint Cans with Paint still in cans (empty paint cans okay)
And thank you for not throwing anything in the small green Community Dumpster. We pay for that!!
Thanks & regards,
This Sunday, Nov. 15, at 11:00 we will be ‘folding’ the Swim Nets that were removed last month and ‘stacking’ on wood pallets for winter storage.
Bill Harding, our Beach & Park Chair is seeking Community Volunteers to assist in this process.
There’s really not a lot of ‘heavy work’, but folding these big pieces really requires a couple hands to prevent just rolling them into a ‘big ball’.
Thanks in advance Selby for ‘showing up’ to help!
