This is an early edition of This Week in Selby, but it's New Year's!
Tuesday, 31 December 2013
The community center will be open from 8pm - 1am for Selbians to come down and mingle with their neighbors. Since this is our first New Year's, we'll have a happy hour type setting. Please bring a snack to share with everyone and a bottle of champagne if you are planning to toast the New Year! Children are always welcome at parent's discretion.
Wednesday, 1 January 2014!!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!! AACPS are closed today for the new year and recovery. While sipping on that Gatorade (great hangover remedy), get out that pen and paper and make some resolutions! I'm sure number one will be "Get more involved with my community because it's amazingly awesome!".
Friday, 3 January 2014
1st Friday Happy Hour from 7pm - 9pm. Our last happy hour was INCREDIBLE! We had Zumba demonstrations under the disco ball which were high energy and fun. We had munchies. We had some cool neighbors who stopped by to say "Hey Neighbor!" which was our theme for December. January is National Hobby Month so share some of your hobbies at happy hour! Zumba is a GREAT hobby and this will be our last demonstration before classes begin. We're also trying to coerce our newest group (calling out to you Mike Bouchard - you guys need a name! LOL) to hop by and jam a little. Cooking is great hobby too! Got any recipes you want to try? Happy hour is the perfect test lab!
1st Friday Happy Hour - Friday, 3 January 7pm-9pm - BE THERE!
Good Evening Selby!! I have a few updates for ya!
The Geminid Meteor Shower has been cancelled for Friday night. Due to a weather system rolling in for Saturday, the skies will probably be too cloudy to see much. I do encourage everyone to step outside their own homes though and see if they can catch a shooting star!!
Santa-At-The-Beach will be on Sunday from 11:00am to 2:00pm. Santa will be available to hear wish lists and pose for pics from 11:00am to 12:30pm. We REALLY need some sign ups for the potluck!
From Kim Bareuther:
Let's spread the Christmas spirit and carol through the streets of Selby! Two opportunities to participate:
Tuesday, 17 December at 6:30pm at 8th Ave and Selby Heights Blvd
Thursday, 19 December at 6:30pm at the community center
Music will be distributed and led by Neal Phillips. If you would like to participate, please don your festive reflective gear (or flashlight) to keep us warm and safe.
Finally, please email all Holiday Home nominees to SelbyBay@gmail.com. Don't forget house addresses! The SCA Board will vote on their favorites and the winners will be announced on Monday, 23 December. Nominees will be posted on the website!

Zumba is coming to Selby! Classes are due to start 8 January from 6:30pm to 7:30pm and will run for 8 weeks. Demonstrations will be given at this month's 1st Friday Happy Hour. Please email SelbyBay@email.com for questions.
This is going to be a busy month and a quick one too! Everyone is hustling and bustling around. Be sure to stop...breathe...and ENJOY your holiday. That's what it's for right? Family...friends...things that really matter. Now that I think about it...if you see me out-and-about, then make sure you remind me too! I am guilty! Seriously, it's good to get out for mere enjoyment and what better place to go than your own community. Good peeps. Ya can't beat the drive! Kids are always welcome.
Let's start out by celebrating "National 'Hi' Neighbor Month". What a perfect theme for this month! Stop by the community center on Friday, 6 December and say "Hi neighbor!". Bring your own snacks and refreshments and just chill from the work week. This month we will have a Zumba instructor giving a demo for a class being held starting 8 January. If you like what you see, then register then and there! Just a little FYI, ya know this will be good for your New Year's Resolution and it's closer than a gym.
On Sunday, 8 December the Woodland Beach Volunteer Fire Department will be driving Santa around for their annual toy drive. This year they will stop at the community center only. Please bring new, wrapped toys labelled with age appropriate group, gender and size. They are also collecting gently used coats, hats, mitten/gloves and nonperishable food item. The fire department will enter Selby at 6:30pm so I suggest being at the community center a little early. Please park on the sides of the parking lot so that the firetruck has plenty of room to pull and around.
The Selby Holiday Home contest is in full swing. I do realize that most folks don't have lights up, but you have until the 21st to get nominations in. Email pictures to SelbyBay@gmail.com and DON'T FORGET TO INCLUDE THE HOUSE ADDRESS. Pictures will be posted on the website and the SCA Board will vote on their favorites. Winners will be announced on 23 December.
Do you like to sing? Would you like to go caroling? We are forming a caroling group for the holidays. The group will perform on two evenings and, hopefully, at Santa-At-The-Beach. Please email SelbyBay@gmail.com ASAP if you are interested. We need to get this going quickly.
Finally, stop by the website and see the cookie of the day! I'm going to try (you know how that goes) to post a cookie recipe a day through December. As always, if you have any questions, then please email me at SelbyBay@gmail.com.
There's a lot going on in Selby this month! I hope to see everyone at either one or ALL of our functions. Keep in mind that all Selby events rely on the help of volunteers. If there is an opportunity to volunteer or donate, then please do. We truly appreciate it and it makes the events nicer for everyone!
1st Friday Happy Hour - 6 December
The theme for this month is "National 'Hi' Neighbor Month"! Come out to the community center from 7:00pm until 9:00pm to say "Hi Neighbor!". Bring your own snacks and refreshments and bring along the kiddos as well. This is a great opportunity to chat with friends and meet some new neighbors. We're going to have a special Zumba demo this month! Have ya wanted to try it? Can you feel the holidays just building up behind that belt? This may be a great opportunity for ya and HEY! classes start after the New Year so you can hop on that Resolution Train to Skinny Town! You can not only get more information at the happy hour BUT you can also sign up!!
Firehouse Santa - 8 December
Every year Woodland Beach Volunteer Fire Department chauffeurs Santa around Selby. For some odd reason SOMETHING always happens. Either they come in from the back of the neighborhood and the times are shifted or it's FREEZING or it's raining. We can't predict the weather, but we can make it a little easier on our fire department friends. Firehouse Santa is a wonderful event that distributes toys and warm clothing to local families in need. They need YOUR help though!
Bring a new, wrapped toy with you labelled with age appropriate group, gender and size. They also will be accepting gently used coats, hat, mittens/gloves and nonperishable food items.
Firehouse Santa enters Selby at 6:30pm. I highly recommend being there a bit early. Also, park to the sides of the parking lot so the firetruck can get in and out safely.
Geminid Meteor Shower - 13 December
The Geminid Meteor shower is the most prolific of all the meteor showers during the year. Meteors, shooting stars, are quite frequent and some can be quite large and bright. It's a night full of wishes! The community center will be open from 8:00pm until 10:00pm for those who would like to view the meteors from the beach.
This event rests in Mom Nature's hands. It will be cancelled due to rain or cloud cover. Cancellation will be announced here and on Facebook.
Santa-At-The-Beach - 15 December
As always, Santa will be making his way to Selby on 15 December. He'll arrive at the community center at 11:00am and stay until 12:30 for wish lists and pictures. We will enjoy a potluck lunch and cap off the afternoon with a reading of 'Twas The Night Before Christmas at 1:30pm.
In order to make this event a success, we need the support and donations of the community. Please sign up for the potluck at the link below. If you would like to bring something and it is not listed, then please email me at SelbyBay@gmail.com.
Movie Night - 20 December
We'll be playing a double feature this month! Beginning at 6:00pm, we will show "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" for the little ones. At 7:00pm, we will show "It's a Wonderful Life".
Bring your own chairs and blankets to spread across the floor. Chips and sodas will be offered for sale for $1 each.
Selby Holiday Home - 1-21 December
Every year the top 3 house light displays in Selby are awarded. Nominations are open! Email pictures of your favorite holiday house and email them to SelbyBay@gmail.com. DON'T FORGET AN ADDRESS!! Submissions will end on the 21 December and the SCA Board will vote for their favorite. Winners will be announced 23 December.
New Year's Eve - 31 December
Plans are in the works for a New Year's celebration at the community center. Stay tuned for details.
