Is The Water Safe?

From what I have been told, we have very good water qualtiy here in Selby. Unfortunately, our Bay is very polluted and caution must be used whenever you swim in it. Ingesting Bay water can lead to bacteria being taken into the body which can cause a great deal of stomach upset similar to a stomach virus. Use caution when swimming with open cuts. Bacteria can get into open wounds and lead to infection. Refrain from swimming 24 hours after a rain storm. A hard rain can wash insecticides, fertilizers and other yard chemicals into the water which can make swimmers sick. After a good swim in the Bay, follow it up with a rinse down!

Bacteria counts will be updated during the swim season

*  Levels greater than 104 are considered unsafe for human contact.

** Higher levels in these areas may be a directed result from dog owners failing to pick up after their pets as well as geese who live on the shores. Please be sure to clean up after your pet and tell others too!!

No Swimming After Rainfalls

All Anne Arundel country beaches are under a no swimming /no direct water contact advisory for 48 hours after a rainfall due to predicted elevated bacteria levels from rainwater runoff and increased health risks.

Pick Up That Poo!

Did you know that your pets' waste may be hurting the Bay? If you are leaving pet waste in your yard, not picking up after your pet when walking around the neighborhood or allowing your pet to relieve themselves in the water, then you are directly affecting the Bay's ecosystem. Read what Stormwatercenter.net has to say about pet waste and the Bay ~ "The release of nutrients from the decay of pet waste promotes weed and algae growth, limiting light penetration and the growth of aquatic vegetation. This in turn can reduce oxygen levels in the water, affecting fish and other aquatic organisms."  Pet waste also releases dangerous bacteria into the water. How does pet waste get from my back yard to the Bay? Storm drains! They all lead into the Bay!
