Summer Time Is Here!
Summer is finally here and it's a long one this year! We haven't had many summer activities in the past few summers so this summer will be a beta year for the coming summers. We are going to try to implement a summer program that hopefully will be added to in the following summer breaks.
Green Team Meeting
Thursday, 29 June
At the picnic tables on the boat ramp side of the beach
This is just a short little introductory meeting to discuss the Green Team and their summer recycling job! Everyone is invited.
Stop by the beach on Wednesday from 10:30am to Noon and sign up for summer programs. By signing up, you are just providing an email list for updates and cancellations. We will also be introducing The Kindness Rocks Project that will run throughout the summer.
The Kindness Rocks Project are inspirational rocks that are handprinted rocks that are left for others to find and to leave. We will set up a rock garden at the clubhouse for folks to pick up and leave rocks and neighbors are encouraged to make their own rock piles. This is a great way to get kids out and about the neighborhood to spread positive sentiments of kindness. On Wednesday we'll have a limited supply of rocks, paint, markers and clear coat. The rocks came from Home Depot and are only about $10 per bag. Feel free to pick up a bag and have a rock painting party at your own house!
** Please leave rocks in places where they will be found and will not cause issues to neighbors. For instance, stay away from lawns to avoid lawn mowers. Also, feel free to post rocks that you have found to Facebook!
You can find out more about The Kindness Rocks Project at this website: www.thekindnessrocksproject.com.
Summer Clubs Rules
The Selby Summer Program
The Selby Summer Program is a program to provide kids with things to do within their own neighborhood during the summer months. Throughout the summer we will offer various "clubs". Kids will earn tokens for each club activity they complete. At the end of the summer, each child that has participated will receive a certificate and the child that has collected the most tokens in each club will win a Selby Summer Medal. Below you will find the following clubs and if you click on the title then that will take you to the information page for that club.
- Jogging Club - Jogging Club gets the kids out and moving! Joggers meet at the Horseshoe (semi-paved area by playgrounds) and run the semi-paved path. After each lap, the jogger is given a mileage tag that can be turned in to mark off spaces on their foot cards to earn foot tokens.
- Game Club - Remember Red Light, Green Light? Remember Kick The Can? Where did these games go? Are they apps now? Way back in the dark ages before technology, kids played outside. Kids today ask the eternal question - What did you do?! We played! In Game Club, kids learn old school games and hopefully will bring them back to their street and gather up their friends to continue the games.
- Book Club - Every year Anne Arundel County Public Schools puts out a summer reading list. The public library has all those books pulled and marked so they are easy to find. They are really good books and grade level appropriate. This club is both online (Goodreads) with bi-weekly meets. Readers get a token for each book they read.
- Green Team - Our beach is important and during the summer months we like it looking clean and taken care of! Occasionally the Green Team will meet for a round of beach clean ups as well as various other environmental tasks throughout the summer. At the end of each task, team members will receive a token. Look for opportunities on the Green Team's page or on the front of the website as well as social media sites.
Summer Sign Ups
There will be sign up sheets at all the activities and you only need to sign up one time and not for each event. The sign up sheet will be used to email updates or cancellations. Occasionally, there may also be short activities or story times depending on interest and availability. Those will also be emailed out to everyone on the sign up sheet.
RSVPs will be required for activities to get a green light on their scheduled day. RSVPs can be emailed (SelbyBay@gmail.com) or just checked off on Facebook. If you RSVP, then PLEASE make sure you will be available to attend the activity. An RSVP is not needed if you are interested in an activity. It is ONLY if you are planning to go. Activities will be cancelled with less than 5 participants. Cancellations will be announced on social media as well as on the club's page or here on the social page if it is not a club.
