WEEKLY UPDATES - 4 September 2017
Good evening Selby,
I know it’s been a while, but with so many folks enjoying their vacation there’s not much going on in Selby. Sadly, summer is over and now it’s time to get back to school and get some work done!
On The Calendar This Week:
Tuesday, 5 September 2017
- Community Board Meeting, 7:00pm
Thursday, 7 September 2017
- Band Practice, 7:30pm
Welcome back to school!! School begins tomorrow for grades 1 through 5, 6 and 9. All grades go back on Wednesday, 6 September with a staggered entrance for Kindergarten beginning on the 7th, I believe. AACPS has a new website and it looks pretty good! You can find bus schedules posted there at: www.aacps.org. Remember, school times have changed as well so make sure you check the website for appropriate school hours.
As you are probably aware, Hurricane Irma is spinning away in the Atlantic trying to figure out which way to go. As of this moment, there is a strong probability that she may go visit Florida for a while. After that, the path is uncertain. There is a chance that Irma may continue up the east coast. If that is the case, then we will need to start preparing. Anne Arundel County does not have an evacuation plan for the Mayo Peninsula. We have been told that in case of an emergency, that Mayo residents must ‘shelter in place’. This means that communities must handle with emergencies on their own if county services can not reach them. In light of this, as recommended by the county OEM (Office of Emergency Management), Selby is making a list of folks who can volunteer specific services that would be valuable in case of emergencies like medical, vet, plumber, tree removal, carpenter, etc. This information will be kept confidential and ONLY utilized in case of an emergency. Volunteers can send their name, cell phone number and service they would be willing to volunteer for to SelbyBay@gmail.com. Also, we would like to make a list of the elderly and those with medical conditions so that they can be checked on in emergencies. Again, this information is kept confidential and is ONLY to be used in extreme emergencies like a hurricane for instance. You can email name, address and if it’s a general check like for the elderly or a medical check. We do not need to know your illness. You can send that information to SelbyBay@gmail.com.
While we wait to see what Irma will do, now is the time to start thinking about actions to take in case we come in the direct line of fire. If you have a boat in the water, then how will you handle that? If you have a generator, then does work properly or will you need to go and buy one? How will you handle pet care if we are told that we need to evacuate? Do you have a list of your valuables that you will take with you if we are called on to leave? Thinking about these things now can save time when time is short and do not require a large degree of effort while we wait and see what the weather does.
Community elections are 17 September at the clubhouse. Nominations for Board positions will be taken until 9 September and must be property owners and willing to serve if elected. You can find a list of positions as well as descriptions on the Selby website at www.selbyonthebay.org. Nominations can be emailed to Shirleen Pilgrim at firstname.lastname@example.org or Lauren Smith at email@example.com. Look for a flyer with all of this information on your mailbox in the next few days as well as on the Selby website.
